How a Cardiff man is making big money from posting videos to YouTube

He talks about football and video games

e's the football pundit living the sports star’s lavish lifestyle of cash and cars – but you’ve probably never heard of him.

Former supermarket shelf stacker Daniel Gonthier now drives around in a £100,000 supercar and pockets up to twice that amount in a year – all by posting videos to YouTube.

While the likes of former Wales and Cardiff City star Craig Bellamy are regulars on screen talking about the beautiful game Daniel – who grew up on a Cardiff council estate – now lives the life of sporting high-rollers.

The 25-year-old, who has appeared on the BBC’s Young, Welsh and Pretty Minted , has made a fortune making videos and posting them to his YouTube channel where he goes by the name Gonth.

In these videos Daniel - who recently moved to London but is already planning a return to Cardiff - talks about football and football video game Fifa.

He films, edits and stars in the short videos and while unconventional, his new-media job has proven lucrative.

And though he doesn’t know exactly how much money he’s made from making YouTube videos, he did reveal a rough estimate of his yearly takings.

“On a good year, it can be between - a rough figure - about £150,000 to £200,000,” Daniel said.

Daniel, who now has 1.7 million subscribers on his channel, first started making videos on a basic webcam, after friends reacted well to his first post.

“The first thing I ever did was the cinnamon challenge - I just recorded it on my webcam. It got mess everywhere.

“It was people I knew in real life back then, because I didn’t have any fans back then.

“The people I knew just thought it was sort of stupid and funny.”

But his channel grew rapidly from those humble beginnings.

And as he acquired a larger following, he started getting noticed by big companies. After he earned his first paycheck from advertising (£500-a-week), that’s when Daniel decided to leave his job at Iceland.

He left the job in “good spirits” because the YouTube star, who comes from a council estate in St Mellons, is “still waiting for something to go wrong”.

“I just always keep thinking I could end up back there [in Iceland] one day,” he said.

“When you come from where I come from, a council estate, you don’t think it’s going to last forever.”

He explains, that while he wasn’t rich growing up, his family was still taken care of by his mother.

“We weren’t poor, but we weren’t well off, if you know what I mean.

“I’d get stuff, my mum did try. But it was more like I’d go and get it as I got older.”

Daniel is now set to return to the Welsh capital after his stint in London wasn’t what he was expecting.

“I’m moving back to Cardiff now next month - you’re the first person to know that.

“I missed home. I missed everyone. I miss living in Cardiff.

“It was not what I expected it to be. It’s different. Everything’s close in Cardiff, in London everything’s like an hour away.

“I can just drive if I ever need to be in London.”
